Founded with the fundamental belief that every person deserves access to the best care, American Hospital Dubai is one of the region’s most comprehensive healthcare service providers with delivery from primary care to the most sophisticated specialties, including Intensive Care Medicine. Our comprehensive ICU is dedicated to the monitoring and treatment of all complex, critically unwell patients.
American Hospital Dubai’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is designed to care for patients with severe or life-threatening conditions of varying complexities and etiology (cause) including medical conditions, trauma or recovery following major surgery. The ICU is a 43 bedded unit equipped with a dedicated nursing station, state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and point-of-care (POC) computer technology. This facility is staffed by highly experienced consultant critical-care physicians supported by experts across all medical and surgical specialties. We have a robust multidisciplinary ethos involving specialist ICU nurses, clinical pharmacists, dieticians, and physiotherapists who attend the daily rounds in order to provide the most holistic, caring, and comprehensive care possible within the ICU.
• ICU Bed Capacity: The ICU at American Hospital is a 43-bedded facility with 4 dedicated Pediatric ICU (PICU) beds managed by expert pediatric ICU physicians. We have cared for many patients infected with Covid 19 as one of the very few private hospitals dedicated to doing so and have very favorable outcomes. We continue to maintain a specific Covid ICU for those patients with severe Covid 19 disease.
Bedside Services: With our advanced monitoring and the additional space within the ICU we can provide the majority of procedures by the bedside thus minimizing the movement of critically ill patients unnecessarily. These procedures include bronchoscopy, upper and lower GI endoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy placement, and renal replacement therapy amongst others.
• Multi-disciplinary Approach: The ICU facility operates by virtue of its multidisciplinary approach, which engages experts of various departments to coordinate with each other and map out a comprehensive course of action to get the best health outcomes for a patient. It is this approach that allows for our excellent clinical outcomes, among the best in the nation.
The ICU at AHD provides extensive and comprehensive critical care management across all ICU subspecialties. This is inclusive of medical and surgical ICU (including oncology, cardiology, major general post-operative cases) in addition to neuro-critical care and cardiothoracic critical care.
As mentioned above this makes our ICU one of the most comprehensive in the region with the ability to provide:
• Continuous in-room telemetry (monitoring) with the additional support of every monitor being observed 24/7 via a central station
• Respiratory system support through non-invasive and invasive techniques. Specifically, CPAP, BIPAP, High flow nasal oxygen, and invasive ventilation via endotracheal tube or tracheostomy.
• Administration of nitric oxide
• Venovenous ECMO (for lung support)
• Venoarterial ECMO (for heart and lung support)
• Patients with intra-aortic balloon pumps
• Palliative care for patients with cancer
• Endoscopy
• Renal replacement therapy including hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy
• Ultrasound-guided procedures such as nerve block insertion, paracentesis, thoracocentesis, and EBUS.
• Extensive organ support for a multitude of pathologies.
• Via the support of an expert medical and surgical consultant team we can provide expert opinion, investigation, and management at any time by other consultant team members. This is
Inclusive of cardiologists, pulmonologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, general surgeons, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and ENT amongst many more.
We accept critically ill patients requiring intensive care services from hospitals and health care facilities both within and out of the UAE.
We’re excited about new ventures.
While we’re continuously working towards exploring new ventures to expand our menu of healthcare services, we’re collaborating with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the National Committee for Organ Donation to establish a system for the early identification and management of organ donors providing hope and life-changing interventions to people all across the UAE.
Once patients improve from their critical illness the journey moves quickly on to recovery and rehabilitation. Again this multidisciplinary and patient-specific (individualized) process improves patient outcomes and enables patients to return home to their loved ones as soon as possible.
