The Infectious Disease Department at the AHD treats infectious diseases that are usually caused by organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.
The world is full of these organisms, and while many of them are not harmful, some can become life-threatening and may require hospitalization.
Infectious diseases can be transmitted from person to person when you are in contact with the infected person’s body fluids, through coughs and colds, or via a vector, such as a mosquito. It can also be transmitted from animals to humans.
Some common examples of infectious diseases include SARS, influenza, common cold, tuberculosis (TB), Hepatitis A and B, pneumonia and even the foot and mouth disease.
Early symptoms of such diseases include fever and fatigue, coughing, muscle cramps, and even diarrhea. Mild infections may respond to rest and essential medicines, while some life-threatening infections may need intensive care.
Many infectious diseases, such as measles and chickenpox, can be prevented by vaccines. Frequent and thorough hand-washing also helps protect you from most infectious diseases.
